AI governance in banking and insurance · Researcher in cognitive autonomy

For more than fifteen years I have worked on the systems that financial institutions need to maintain, evolve and sometimes replace. Over time I learned something that was not in any manual. Keeping a system running is not the same as understanding it. It can stay in operation for decades and depend on two or three people able to explain why it was designed that way or what will happen if someone touches it.

That concern changed the way I look at artificial intelligence. I am not only interested in what a model can do, but in what capacity the organisation keeps to understand its results, argue with them and answer for the decisions it makes with them.

I live between Murcia, Jerez de la Frontera and Madrid, and I play chess worse than I would like.

Career

I am COO and co-founding partner of Vermont Solutions, a consultancy with teams in Spain, Chile and Mexico. We work on legacy modernisation, high-performance computing and AI governance for banks and insurers. What I know about governance I learned by implementing it, first at home and then with clients.

Research

I am a doctoral researcher in the Knowledge Society programme at the University of Salamanca, where I am developing the Vital Interface framework. Between the world and the machine there is a layer of interpretation that only a person can occupy, and education and organisations should be designed so that this layer does not atrophy. The framework is published in 2026 as a Springer chapter, and I have presented it at OdiseIA, at the PRME Latin America and Caribbean Meeting and in the ICO Foundation’s Cuadernos series.
